How to Bulk Rename, Prefix and Move GTM Tags to Folders

You inherit a container with 80 tags, no naming convention, and not a single folder. In the GTM UI, fixing that means opening each tag, one at a time. There's a faster way.

What GTM's native editing won't do

First, decide on a naming convention

Before bulk-editing, pick a pattern. A reliable one is Type - Purpose - Detail, e.g. GA4 - Event - purchase or Conversion - Google Ads - Lead. Consistent names make everything below — searching, filtering, folders — actually useful.

Bulk-editing with GTM Tag Helper

In the extension's Bulk Actions tab:

  1. Select the workspace.
  2. Select the tags — filter by name or by tag type, or select all.
  3. Choose an action:
    • Find & replace in names (e.g., GA GA4 - )
    • Add a prefix (e.g., [Conversion] )
    • Add a suffix (e.g., _v2)
    • Move to a folder — pick an existing one or type a new name to create it on the fly
  4. Apply to all selected tags in one pass.

A few tips

Bulk Actions is a Pro feature — currently 60% off.
